Smoothest Mode of Ground Transportation at Chicago Airports
Chicago is an international hub of commerce, trade and finance. On account of its international importance as centre of economy, trade, industry, finance and culture, the city enjoys the status of alpha world city. It ranked 7th rank on Global Cities Index 2012. It is called a City by the Lake because it is located on the southwestern shore of Lake Michigan. It is also known as a windy city because its location on the shores of the lake makes it breezy. It is a great sports town with magnificent outdoor stadiums and beautiful parks. It is home to some of earliest skyscrapers and the tallest towers in the world. This densely populated multicultural city of art has pristine lagoons, waterfront beaches, and ethnic restaurants offering diverse food, jazz music, comedy clubs, great museums and grand architecture. It is one of the largest media market in the USA. The Millennium Park, Navy Pier, Grant Park, the Chicago theatre, the Merchandise Mart, Wrigley Field, the Loop, the Lakefront, observation deck of Willis Tower, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Magnificent Mile are some of the renowned attractions the city offers to tourists. In addition, the city has one of the busiest airports in the world.
Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD)
Located towards northwest of the city in Cook County at a distance of 17 or 18 miles from downtown Chicago , Chicago O’Hare International Airport is a major airport of Chicago. It is named after Edward O’Hare. Operated by the City of Chicago Department of Aviation, it serves more than 60 foreign destinations. The airport enjoys its global long-standing connections and has retained for years awards and titles of being the best airport in North America. It has four terminals: terminal 1, terminal 2 terminal 3 and terminal 5. Terminal 5 is devoted to international flights. These four terminals have lounges, shops, restaurants and other facilities that passengers need at the airport.
Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW)
Chicago Midway International Airport is the busiest airport of Illinois after O’Hare International Airport. It is located towards southwest at a distance of around nine miles from downtown Chicago. It is built in the form of a square having mile-long sides. The airport is not the world’s busiest airport but it is said that this square is ‘the world’s busiest square mile’. It has five runways and three concourses. It serves destinations not only in North America but also in other parts of the world.
In addition to these two major airports, the city of Chicago is also served by two other airports: Gary/Chicago International Airport (GYY) and Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD). They are located farther from the city than the two major airports at a distance of twenty-five miles and sixty-eight miles respectively. Each of these airports has two runways. They mostly serve domestic destinations.
Ground Transportation at Chicago Airports
Ground transportation is available at these airports in the form taxis, buses, trains and shuttles. Taxis are available outside baggage claim. They run on meters. Taxicab drivers may charge you more during rush hours and during late night hours. Taxicabs may have unskilled drivers whose driving is unsafe and erratic. They may handle your luggage carelessly. People complain that these drivers remain engaged with their phones while driving. In addition to the taxicabs, there are trains run by the Chicago Transit Authority. These CTA trains provide 24 hours service. The trains are cheaper than the taxicabs but they may take more time than do the taxicabs. They take you to the key destinations in Chicago but don’t provide door-to-door service. There are gaps between the trains and the trains may be overcrowded and packed during peak hours. There may be cases of theft or passengers losing their cell phones and belongings during peak hours. Passengers complain that the trains are not late models. The shuttles at Chicago airports are also cheaper than the taxicabs but they are time-consuming. Their fare may vary from location to location. They are packed.
So would you like to save a few dollars at the cost of your precious time ? Safety comes first in travelling. Certainly, you would not like to lose your precious things in the over-crowded public transport. There are times when your flight arrives late at night and you are desperate to get home. At such an hour of night you would not like to travel with taxicabs drivers having mental problems who, with their manipulative discourse, may make you pay more at late hours of night. All these conditions require that you plan early and go for trusted and reliable transport providers.
